Global Dynamics of a Plant-Herbivore Model with Toxin-Determined Functional Response

چکیده
Studies of the dynamics of plant-herbivore interactions that explicitly address model robustness are important in assessing uncertainty. Hence, identifying conditions that guarantee the global stability of plant-herbivore systems can be used to assess the rationale involved in, for example, the selection of management and/or control decisions. The model used here to illustrate these issues is naturally capable of supporting complex dynamics; the result of the explicit incorporation of plant toxicity in the functional response. Unlike the traditional Holling Type 2 functional response, the selected toxin-determined functional response loses its monotonicity at high levels of plant toxicity. Systems with nonmonotone functional responses are capable of supporting multiple interior equilibria and bistable attractors. Therefore, identifying conditions that guarantee global stability is not only mathematically challenging but important to scientists. We are able to find necessary and sufficient condition on the nonexistence of a closed orbit via the transformation of the model to a new equivalent system. The Poincaré–Bendixson theorem is used to show that the existence of a unique interior equilibrium point guarantees its global asymptotical stability whenever it is locally asymptotically stable. It is shown that, whenever there are multiple interior equilibria, the local stability of the “first interior equilibrium” implies model bistability. In other words, the phase space is characterized by two subregions: the basins of attraction of two stable equilibria, the interior and the boundary equilibria.

A model of plant-herbivore interaction with size structure in plants using toxin-determined functional response
One of the possible consequences of global warming in the northern hemisphere is the invasion of Arctic Tundra by woody plants, which is influenced by the chemical defense of plants against mammal browsing. In this paper, we explore the toxin-mediated plant-herbivore interaction with size structure in plants using a simplified mathematical model. The size structure of plants is important as it ...
متن کاملDynamics of a plant-herbivore model with toxin-induced functional response.
Traditional functional responses for plant-herbivore interactions do not take into account explicitly the effect of plant toxin. However, considerable evidence suggests that toxins set upper limits on food intake for many species of herbivorous vertebrates. In this paper, a mathematical model for plant-herbivore interactions mediated by toxin-determined functional response is studied. The model...

A system of ordinary differential equations is considered which models the plant–herbivore interactions mediated by a toxin-determined functional response. The new functional response is a modification of the traditional Holling Type II functional response by explicitly including a reduction in the consumption of plants by the herbivore due to chemical defenses. A detailed bifurcation analysis ...

A system of ordinary differential equations is considered that models the interactions of two plant species populations, an herbivore population, and a predator population. We use a toxin-determined functional response to describe the interactions between plant species and herbivores and use a Holling Type II functional response to model the interactions between herbivores and predators. In ord...
